Horseback Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

What is this safari about?

This safari takes you on a five night horseback ride over the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Three nights are based at Camp Kalahari right on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans, with the remaining two nights spent in a fly camp sleeping under the stars on the pan.

The itinerary varies between the wet and the dry season, with there being two departure dates each month. Other dates are available on request for group reservations.

Who can go?

  • The safari is only suitable for intermediate to experienced riders. Private safaris are available for the less experienced.
  • Groups are limited to a maximum of eight guests.

Why is this special?

  • Riding on the edge Makgadikgadi Pans is one of those once in a lifetime experiences for riders.
  • Large herds of wildlife, especially zebras, roam the area – being on horseback means you can get up close.
  • Due to the smooth and flat surface of the pan, night outrides are possible in good moonlight with the opportunity to sleep in a camp in the middle of the pan.

Where is this?

The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are located to the center of Botswana. The pans themselves can be massive and it is possible for the traveller to truly see nothing but the curvature of the earth for 360 degrees.

What should I expect to pay?

The cost for five nights starts from USD $3,600 per person, sharing, fully inclusive.

What Extensions do you recommend?

For riders the Okavango Delta is a MUST do option. This is however BIG5 terrain so only suitable for the experienced rider. The camps there also offer activities for non-experienced riders

Most of the other safariFRANK Botswana safari components can also be added to your journey.
