The 9-Day Uganda Cycling Safari is an awesome way to experience the real Uganda on the ground and amongst its people!

Cycle as part of a small group too and in all the iconic locations of Uganda and stay in basic but comfortable lodge accommodation along the way. The option is also there to upgrade the accommodation.

The tour takes you from Kampala to Fort Portal, Kibale, Mburo National Park and back to Entebbe. Along the way there are many cultural and wildlife experiences including trekking for chimps at Kibale, cycling around the lakes, an Agro tour, as well as local food and coffee experiences.

Cycling distances and difficulty are adjusted to suit the group.

Also good to know:

  • We have a team of multiple (cycling) guides per trip so we can split the group if needed.
  • One female guide is purely for non-related cycling activities so bring your partner along. We have a parallel program.
  • We have different routes per cycling region adjusted to the fitness and wishes of the client.
  • We have bikes for rental (hardtail 29 – Rockshox suspension) but you can also bring your own bike.
  • Our lodges provide mid-range accommodation – a good place to relax after a ride.

detailed itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Uganda

The journey starts here. The team on site will be waiting for you at the airport in Entebbe. After a transfer to Kampala (45 minutes to 1 hour) we arrive at our lodge. Time for check in and a toast to the start of our Ugandan adventure.

TRANSFER TO LODGE

Day 2: Lake Victoria

We cycle from our lodge to the shores of Lake Victoria After a very local boat trip, we immediately fly in and enjoy a combination of remote villages and unique paths along forests, jungle, fields and plantations. We stop for a local lunch in the village and make our way to higher ground. Distant views of Lake Victoria await us, as does a fresh beer and buffet upon arrival in Kampala.

BIKE RIDE / DISTANCE: FROM 35KM (450HM) TO 75KM (1050HM)

Day 3: Crater Lakes

We get up early to avoid traffic and aim our arrows at the next lodge: one on the edge of an imposing crater lake, in the shadows of the Mountains of the Moon. Once we arrive (early afternoon) we settle in and go for a walk around the crater lake (5km). We will enjoy the gorgeous region of Fort Portal for three days.

TRANSFER TO FORT PORTAL (6h)
HIKE (5km)

Day 4: The Rift Valley

A shorter but steeper stage takes us to the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley.

We start around the crater lake and get lost in the banana plantations after which we cycle towards the valley. Magical views of the valley and the Rwenzori Mountains await us. We combine the cycling activity with a local food experience. Simon + Anette and family receive us with open arms for a local buffet – the taste of Uganda!

Day 5: Farming and chimps

We start the day with an Agro tour (2.5 hours), a guided tour during which we learn more about local agriculture. We harvest and eat sugar cane, look for pineapples and learn about banana varieties and other crops. Did you know that some farmers make use of – and produce biogas?

The afternoon brings us to the edge of the Kibale rainforest. The perfect place to spot the chimpanzees in Uganda – or other monkeys – as no less than 13 different species of primates live in the forest. We follow a ranger through the forest and get close to the chimpanzees.

Day 6: Coffee and more

We jump on our bikes and cycle along the edge of the forest to a local coffee farm where we learn about the coffee process from bean to cup. The second destination of the day is a crater lake surrounded by monkeys where we have to option to swim and enjoy a BBQ!

Day 7: To Mburo

Our journey continues as we head more to the south-west of Uganda.

Lake Mburo National will be our next destination – a safari park where we enjoy cycling between giraffe’s, zebra’s, hippo’s and more. We cycle trough the dry savanna in the afternoon and climb a rock that gives a magical view over the park.

Day 8: MTB Safari Mburo

A unique end of the cycling journey: a safari experience on the mountain bike.

Once out of the park we have an option to do some extra loops, or we can just rest and enjoy the lodge.
