For those on an African safari, it is a humbling experience to become a participant in the wild, far from roads, where nature determines your path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What to know:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilderness is characterized by being untrammeled, natural, undeveloped, and offering solitude.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn how walking safaris allow you to participate in the environment, instead of only observing it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilderness trails are multi-day hikes where you carry all your own supplies, including water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A true wilderness experience involves disconnecting from technology and timekeeping devices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim is to leave as little impact as possible, carrying out everything that you carry in.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/safarifrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC00076.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3695 size-full\" title=\"safari with gesa and frank lion sighting\" src=\"https:\/\/safarifrank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC00076.jpg\" alt=\"safari with gesa and frank lion sighting\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>How We Define Wilderness In Africa<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thought of going for a multi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">day hike usually only interests a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">select <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">few individuals, typically those we call &#8220;hikers&#8221; (myself not included!). But during my time up in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/safarifrank.com\/safaris\/5-day-walking-safari-in-northern-kruger-national-park\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Kruger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I was asked if I would like to go and be part of the guiding team for a few &#8220;sleep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outs&#8221; and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> better yet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;wilderness trails&#8221;. And I was hooked!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I found a valid reason to walk many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kilometers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a heavy backpack in the African heat, carrying everything I needed to survive with me. To get into the real WILD. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, wilderness is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n&#8217;t the kind usually<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">done by hikers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who try<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conquer a set <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trail<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or mountain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Main elements of wild areas<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the kind where at any point something can happen th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at determines the next path, route<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or destination of the trail. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It focuses on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiencing a natural environment that remains largely undisturbed and uninhabited, where the wild animals get the blood pumping!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Solitude and remoteness\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You step<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> off the beaten track, as far away from roads, cell phone signal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and cold beers as possible. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You reach places few people have visited and see wildlife that is still largely unaffected by human pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Walking Safaris Change The Experience\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I had the opportunity to spend some time with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lowveld Trails company and make a short video on their business and attitude towards it all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Redefining Your Getaway<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are planning your annual trip, but the usual luxury destinations feel predictable. And it really is amazing to see what one can survive off for 5 days in the bush?!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Water and time\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We even had to carry our own water<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and when that runs out<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have to find our own out there! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before setting off, it helped to switch off all technology and leave anything that can tell the time behind.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Totally &#8220;disconnect&#8221; from the norms and immerse yourself <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what it was like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But by far the best thing I noticed about wilderness trails is on the last day. It also happens to be day 5 of no showers. It is the excitement of getting back mixed with the sadness of leaving it all behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Leave No Trace On The Trail<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time spent in true wilderness often shifts your priorities, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for simple comforts and a quieter sense of calm within yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Carry in, carry out\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It truly is all left behind as you carry in what you need and you carry it all back out, leaving as little of an impact on the area as possible (only footprints!). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This commitment to minimal human impact helps preserve the pristine wilderness character and supports the ecological integrity of these vital wildlife habitats.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Wilderness Gives Back To You\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one really appreciates 3 things in life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a warm shower, decent food<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an ice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cold beer. It is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in fact<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the point where you have all the things you have been craving the entire trail that you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">realize <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what you have just achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Inner wilderness\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You reached and experienced true wilderness. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These support long-term<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/safarifrank.com\/au\/safari-types\/conservation-safaris\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conservation and biodiversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for wildlife and for people.
