Why we like it
- Uninterrupted desert scenes which contrast the rest of Botswana.
- Sightings of desert adapted-wildlife including black-maned lion, brown hyenas and honey badgers.
- Located far from any light pollution, this is one of the best places in Africa to enjoy clear and endless starry skies.
- Meet a San Bushman and learn about this ancient people’s fascinating culture
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is an amazing reserve in the largest sand basin in the world. Home of the San bushmen, the reserve also provides fresh grasslands to a large variety of wildlife during the rainy season.
Covering over 50,000 km², CKGR is the second largest game reserve in the world.
Boasting spectacular scenery and some of Botswana’s best summer wildlife viewing, fossil dunes exist between ancient river valleys and the desert bursts to life with the rains between November and April. It is during this time that hordes of game and predators roam the region and cloud formations create the perfect backdrop to the dramatic Kalahari thunderstorms which cut through the uninterrupted desert views before clearing to reveal endless starry nights.
