Set against the historic Big Lagoon site, Big Lagoon Trails Camp offers a unique experience for those in pursuit of adventure and a profound connection with nature’s unbridled beauty.

Located within the dense ebony forests of South Luangwa National Park, Big Lagoon Trails Camp provides an exceptional vantage point over an expansive lagoon, where elephants, giraffes, and other majestic wildlife roam freely. This relocated camp, formerly known as Crocodile River Camp, offers a gateway to the wild heart of Zambia, featuring walking safaris that trace the ancient paths of elephants and the legendary footsteps of David Livingstone. Here, the connection with the land is palpable, and each day brings new discoveries in one of Africa’s most remarkable wilderness areas.
Experience & Activities:
Just a few kilometres upstream from its parent camp, Tafika, Big Lagoon and its sister camp, Chikoko Tree Camp, are sanctuaries of serenity and adventure, accessible only by foot. Morning walks, led by seasoned guides and accompanied by an armed scout and a tea bearer, offer intimate encounters with the landscape and its inhabitants. The trails weave through the bush, offering sights of wildlife at eye level and the thrill of tracking predators from their overnight traces. Afternoon excursions promise a gentler pace but no less excitement, culminating in serene evening returns to the comfort of camp. Each walk is a step back in time, surrounded by nature’s grandeur and the stories of the valley.
Accommodations:
Each of the camp’s three chalets, constructed from natural materials and local craftsmanship, hosts up to six guests, ensuring a personal and secluded stay. These simple yet elegant grass-walled structures include en suite facilities with flush toilets and showers, where hot water is readily available for evening relaxation. The absence of roads or vehicles enhances the tranquility, with every necessity, including luggage, thoughtfully carried by porters. Solar-powered fans and communal charging stations offer modern comforts in harmony with the environment, maintaining the ethos of a true walking safari experience.
