The Inhambane province is known as the land of coconut and cashew, with kilometres of palm-lined beaches and a lively atmosphere, the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago where you can dive amongst manta rays, whale sharks and other fascinating underwater species.
With a rich history dating back to 1560, Inhambane is one of the oldest Portuguese settlements in Mozambique. This charming and sleepy town at the seaside features old Portuguese and Arabic architecture in a Mediterranean climate. Wander the quaint streets along the harbour or enjoy a drink while watching the dhows across the bay.
Inhambane province is the largest cashew nut growing area in Mozambique and the versatile coconut and citrus fruits also come from here.
Only a 30-minute drive from Inhambane town, in the secluded Barra peninsula, are the beautiful beaches of Tofo and Barra, with its clear water and home to Manta Reed – worldwide known for its excellent Manta Ray sightings and swimming with Whale Sharks. The coastline is dotted with coral reefs, making this a great destination for scuba diving and snorkelling. There are luxury villas, sumptuous hotels and awesome rustic beach campsites.
Combining it with a trip to the Kruger National Park in South Africa is an ideal way to mix the reef with the bush.
