Makgadikgadi Pan and Nxai Pan, the largest salt pans in the world, offer unique safari experiences, with great game viewing and bird watching challenged by spectacular scenic views and natural isolation.

Imagine a huge expanse of pristine, sugary white landscape stretching as far as the eye can see and you’ll be picturing the Makgadikgadi Pan. Covering an area bigger than Switzerland, the area was once a large river-fed lake which now lies saline and empty aside from the wildlife and ancient artefacts which can be found scattered across the area.

During the wet season up to 75,000 zebra and wildebeest migrate into the pan with regular sightings of lions, cheetahs and many other predators who follow in their wake. Joining them are hundreds of thousands of flamingos and desert species such as the meerkat and the elusive brown hyena – the third rarest carnivore in the world! All this running wild against a backdrop of Botswana’s iconic Baines Baobabs which line the edge of the pans.

Nxai Pan National Park also offers awesome game sighting in the dry season.
