Itinerary in Brief

The Green Season – or secret season as it is often referred to, is a magical time to travel in Botswana. With exceptional value for money, combining the right regions and lodges can create a truly sensational safari experience. In this six-night Botswana Green Season safari you can enjoy wildlife sightings in Savute exclusive to the green season combined with an authentic permanent water Okavango Delta experience at Xugana Island Lodge.

The Savute region of the Chobe National Park is one of Botswana best game viewing destinations, offering exceptional year-round game viewing. In the green season massive herds of zebra migrate through the Savute Marsh along with other large groups of mammals in search of the rich grasses. This open marsh area makes for easier predator sightings along with the increase in prey available.

Some camps and lodges in the Okavango Delta change dramatically throughout the year with green season often offering a vastly contrasting experience due to the floodwaters having receded. Xugana Island Lodge offers year-round water-based activities located on a private concession in the heart of the Okavango Delta, the best location from which to explore the deep water, lagoons and channels. Guided bush walks on the surrounding islands offer a unique perspective of the delta as well as an opportunity to witness the abundant wildlife on foot. With the lower floodwaters of the green season we are able access the mainland by vehicle to offer our seasonal game-drives which allows for excellent game viewing on day and night drives. The perfect green season Okavango Delta camp with every activity available!

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1-3: Savute Safari Lodge, Chobe National Park

Savuti, also known as Savute lies in the heart of Botswana’s beautiful Chobe National Park. This dynamic wilderness is a sweeping expanse of savannah brooded over by several rocky outcrops which guard a relic marsh and the dry channel that was once its lifeline. The Savute goes through wet and dry cycles, where wild dogs hunt in the dry river channel where crocodiles swam only twenty years ago. Visitors to this spectacular area can spot abundant wildlife including: a variety of birds, elephants, antelope, lion prides, black-backed jackal, bat-eared foxes, tsessebe, kudu, hyena, cheetah Cape buffalo herds, and thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest.

Overnight: Savute Safari Lodge

Savute Safari Lodge accommodates just twenty-four guests in eleven thatched chalets built of local timber and one family room. The chalets, which have been elegantly furnished in calm neutral tones. Savute Safari Lodge offers a shaded viewing deck, an al fresco dining area and swimming pool – ideal for watching the varied wildlife as they make their way to the Channel to drink, Activities are organised around game drives throughout the Savute area in open 4×4 safari vehicles. Many trips will incorporate a visit to the Savute Marsh to give you a chance to see the historic presence of the Savute Channel at the marsh against a backdrop of teeming wildlife.

Day 4-6: Xugana Island Lodge, Okavango Delta

Situated in the northwestern corner of Botswana, the Okavango Delta is a World Heritage Site as it is the largest inland delta in the world. The magnificent Okavango River sprawls out over the dry sands of the Kalahari Desert forming this flourishing waterlogged oasis featuring countless meandering waterways and crystal-clear lagoons studded with water lilies, as well as fertile floodplains and reeded islands inhabited with abundant wildlife. The Okavango Delta stretches over 15000 square kilometers. Commonly spotted animals include lion, rhino, leopard, giraffe, hippos, elephants, crocodiles and countless species of bird.

Overnight: Xugana Island Lodge

Xugana Lagoon is widely accepted as being the most spectacular permanent water site in the entire Okavango Delta. Xugana Island Lodge, situated on a wooded island abutting the lagoon, takes full advantage of this magnificent site. The thatched common area, comprising cocktail bar, lounge and curio shop, is still the original building put up in 1974, when Xugana became only the second tourist lodge ever built in the Okavango Delta. Mokoro trips in eco-friendly dugout canoes, boat safaris to lagoons and islands and wilderness walks give guests the chance to see the Delta wildlife. Optional day and night drives are available on the islands surrounding Xugana Island Lodge. The peaceful boat ride back across Xugana Lagoon during the spectacular African sunset provides a lifelong memory.
