Itinerary in Brief

After your flight from Nairobi (or the Mara or the Coast!) you will be collected from the scheduled airstrips Nanyuki or Loisaba, or the closest private airstrip, for a road transfer to the start of the safari. The road transfer is three hours from Nanyuki, or an hour and a half from Kimancho. You could off course helicopter into camp, if you prefer……

Spend the next 4-nights on a camel supported walking & mobile safari across the Laikipia wilderness, moving to a new location every day. This is just one of the VERY best experiences on offer, no wonder the safari won BEST WALKING SAFARI IN AFRICA IN 2017!

Karisia Walking Safaris offer 3 levels of tented camps, Luxury, Classic and the famous ‘Air Bed and Camel’ for more budget conscious travellers. Walk daily between locations while the Karisia Team supported by their camels, move the whole camp to the next location ahead of your arrival. The walking level is moderate to energetic, covering distances of between 12 to 16 km each morning. The scenery along the way is stunning and some amazing wildlife experiences await you under the watchful eye of your experienced and passionate guide. Arrive in the new camp location around lunch time and enjoy an afternoon siesta before setting out on one of the many afternoon activities on offer.

After 4 glorious nights on mobile safari arrive in Tumaren Camp for some rest and relaxation for the last 2 nights of the safari. Here you can do as little or as much you like, the tents are very spacious and comfortable and with an open plain and salt lick in front of camp, game viewing from camp is very good. There are also many activities on offer for those wanting to be more active.

On the last morning after a hearty breakfast the Team will transfer you to the nearest scheduled airstrips, Nanyuki or Loisaba, or the closest private airstrip, for your onwards flight, or you could of course helicopter out again.

The safari is guaranteed to make lasting memories for all involved!

Detailed Itinerary

Night 1: Nantodo, Karisia Mobile Camp

You will be welcomed by the Team who will have arrived the day before and set up camp below a massive rock called Nantodo. After a refreshing lunch and a relaxing afternoon guests will climb up Nantodo hill and look out towards the Mathews Range and the Karisia Hills. From the hill you scan below for gerenuk, elephant, impala and ostrich. Back at camp hot showers and cool drinks will be waiting for all.

Night 2: Nantodo Fig Tree, Karisia Mobile Camp

You will wake up early and set off after a light breakfast towards the Ewaso River that stretches a long way below. On the way you can look out for gerenuk, grants gazelle and the beautiful grevy zebra. On the way expect to see the Samburu ladies coming to the water with their donkeys and the warriors herding their goats and camels through this ancient landscape.

From the camp you can enjoy a dip in the river to cool off after the walk. After an afternoon of relaxing by the river you will go on an evening walk up the sand river looking for the noisy, but shy stone partridges, golden breasted starlings and if you are lucky greater kudu.

Night 3: Ngai Suisui, Karisia Mobile Camp

You will again wake up very early and set off as the sun is rising, winding your way up the sand river hoping to see klipspringers, Verreaux eagle owls, warthog and elephant as they head for shady places. You will walk slowly up the hill to the campsite on a ridge next to the pinnacle.

Once the heat of the day cools off, you will walk up the awesome pinnacle called Ngai Suisui that has a dramatic 360-degree view of the area and is also the nesting site for a pair of Verreaux eagles. Sundowners here are always feel a fantastic experience!

Night 4: Nagaratat, Karisia Mobile Camp

You will be wake up with the rising sun and walk down a dramatic valley to the river to a serene spot called Namasaa. The landscape is spectacular and you will walk along the river’s edge under some enormous Neutonia trees, watching out for hippos in the deep pools before climbing out of the valley up a rocky river course where the fig trees cling to rocks and klipspringers perch high on the rocks above.

Thereafter the walk breaks out of the valley and on to some rolling country where you will look for elephant and the peculiar pancake tortoises that live in cracks in the rocks. From camp we should see the local herds bringing their livestock to drink and in the evening meander along the river looking at the colourful birds.

Nights 5 and 6: Tumaren Camp

The next morning walk up and out of the river valley to the vehicle, which will be waiting and will take you via the local market on the way back to Tumaren Camp, which is in a wildlife rich area.

This comfortable camp is set on the edge of sweeping plains and each day we will walk out looking for wildlife and climbing rocks, enjoy a picnic on the river and trying to catch a fish or two. We can visit the camel herd and the local school, or simply sit at Tumaren and watch the animals coming to the salt in front of the camp and the birds coming to water.
