Safari Rating
This safari combines 2 of Frank’s favourite Botswana luxury camps in a great mixture of both the Okavango Delta and the harsh Kalahari Desert. These two camps tick almost all the boxes! Breathtaking views and scenery, a touch of 5-star luxury, classic tented camps, a big range of activities and incredible wildlife!
Itinerary in Brief
Starting off in an exclusive private reserve hugging the northern edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, an area that is home to some desert specials, such as the Kalahari lion, springbok, Oryx and Brown Hyena. Then a short charter flight, from the private airstrip, sees you changing scenery completely as you land in the heart of the Okavango Delta, a private concession that encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn, and is home to a myriad of birds, plants and animals.
This 6-night classic luxury safari is well suited for anyone from single travellers to medium sized groups who are seeking to experience Botswana with plenty of luxury and exclusivity. The accommodation is of very high standard and you will find all the luxuries one needs to be comfortable in this pristine wilderness. Both locations are private and in prime locations so one can expect to get the full Okavango and Kalahari experience. And, best of all, there is a 4 guest per vehicle limit so there are no crammed vehicles – it’s all personal, private, attention from top quality guides. THAT is luxury.
With two strongly contrasting landscapes, Frank believes this gives you a great exposure to many different animal’s species and habitat types allowing for a greater diversity of the overall experience.
Detailed itinerary
1st, 2nd & 3rd Nights: Dinaka
Guests are accommodated in seven spacious twin and double-bedded safari tents, each en-suite bathroom has an indoor and outdoor shower, hot and cold running water and flush toilet. Families are accommodated in a two-bedroomed tent, sharing a spacious en-suite bathroom – ideal for families in this child-friendly camp. Dinaka’s tents are well spaced and raised up on wooden decks giving the perfect vantage point over a permanent water hole. Connected by wooden walkways all areas of camp are accessible by wheelchair.
The annual rains transform the arid desert landscape into a lush profusion of Kalahari vegetation, offering guests a unique insight into the lesser known desert experience. The Sleep Out Deck offers guests a panoramic view and the opportunity to spend the night under the magnificent African night sky.
Situated alongside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the focus of activities at Dinaka is exploring the Kalahari experience with wildlife ranging from giraffe to the antelope, small mammals like the honey badger, bat eared fox and porcupine to predators including the Kalahari lion, cheetah, leopard and brown hyena. Activities include morning and afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening. Their window seat guarantee ensures no more than four guests per vehicle when out on game drives. Alternatively, you may get more up close and personal with nature on foot with guided bush walks. Birding is particularly spectacular as Dinaka hosts over 200 different bird species including the Kori Bustard and Crimson Breasted Shrike and a high concentration of Pale Chanting Goshawks
4th, 5th & 6th Nights: Kanana
Guests are accommodated in seven spacious twin and double-bedded safari tents and one family tent, each with en-suite bathrooms with shower, hot and cold running water and flush toilet. The tents are well spaced, affording privacy whilst remaining within comfortable distance from the main camp area.
The annual floods transform parts of this concession into a true water paradise, offering guests the best of both worlds. At certain times of the year guests may actually enjoy the breathtaking spectacle of the water visibly rising around the camp’s raised teak decks. Experience magnificent game sightings during drives as well as the unique experience of exploring the delta’s beautiful waterways by boat. There is also a Sleep Out Deck that offers guests the opportunity to spend the night under the splendid African night sky.
Situated in the Kanana Concession, the focus of activities at Kanana varies with the rising and falling levels of the Okavango Delta. Activities include morning and late afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening. Alternatively, you may explore the crystal-clear waterways by Mokoro or motorboat, and enjoy the magnificent variety of birds, plant and reptile species found in the area. Birding is spectacular, and Kanana hosts a seasonal heronry that teems with activity, a Kanana highlight which converts all visitors to avid ‘twitchers’. Guided bush walks are highly recommended as is fishing for tilapia, African pike and sharptooth catfish.
