Safari Rating
A high-end luxury mobile safari taking place right at the end of Botswana’s rain season, you get to experience both the Kalahari and the Okavango Delta with few other tourists and incredible wildlife!
Itinerary in Brief
Starting off in the well-known Nxai Pan National Park, an area that is home to some desert specials, such as the Kalahari lion, springbok, Oryx and plenty of elephants! This time of the year, the area is also home to a large Zebra migration! Then, a drive via Maun, to the Khwai Community Concession, an area with some of the best game viewing in the country, for two nights in a luxury lodge accompanied by the same guide for continuity. From there you will cross over into the well-known Moremi Game Reserve for another three nights Mobile Safari.
This 8-night wet season safari is well suited for medium to large sized groups seeking to experience Botswana as adventurous, yet luxurious, as possible in their own private camp, in the off season. The accommodation is simple but comfortable and you will find all the luxuries one needs to be comfortable in this pristine wilderness. The campsites and lodge are private and in prime locations so one can expect to get the full Okavango and Kalahari experience.
Detailed itinerary
1st, 2nd & 3rd Nights: Nxai Pan National Park Mobile Safari
In the North of the Nxai Pan National Park lies a large open and grassy pan system surrounded by a well wooded wall of trees around its rim. This grassy expanse along with the permanent man-made water hole attracts plenty of desert adapted herbivores, which in turn supports a healthy predator population which included the spotted hyena, lion, leopard and even cheetah. During the wet season this grassland is transformed into a grazing animal’s paradise and is then, home to a large population of Zebra which migrate from all over Botswana to its plains, making for an amazin wildlife spectacle.
Mobile safaris follow an old tried and tested formula that ‘takes everything along, but leaves nothing behind’. The safari crew uses a truck to ‘transport the camp’ and they will setup camp before you arrive. Accommodation is in the form of a private canvas setup, specifically for the safari and then moved to the next location by the mobile crew.
Guests can decide the level of luxury of the camp, but all will be in private tents (with proper beds) with on-suite bathroom, including a bucket shower (with hot water!) and basic toilet. The safaris are fully guided by the best local guides and guests travel in open game viewing vehicles between locations. The food is prepared by an experienced bush chef who prepares delicious meals on the open fire.
4th & 5th Nights: Machaba Camp
The Khwai concession is located on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta with the Khwai river forming the boundary between the Moremi Game Reserve and the concession. The area is home to some of the best game viewing as the herbivores from the drier surrounds are forced to come to the Khwai river in order to drink. This in turn supports large concentrations of predators especially leopards and if you are lucky, also Painted wolves.
Machaba camp is situated on the edge and overlooking a large flood plain of the Khwai river which separates the community land from the Moremi Game Reserve. The camp is small and intimate with a classy high-quality luxury feeling.
The accommodation is in the form of large inter-leading canvas tents with en-suite flush toilet and shower facilities. The standard of accommodation here is high and very comfortable and along with friendly staff and great food, this is the perfect place from which to enjoy the surrounds.
6th, 7th & 8th Nights: Moremi Game Reserve Mobile Safari
The Moremi Game Reserve is located on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta and consists of a patchwork of lagoons, shallow flooded pans, plains and forests. The area and diversity of habitat supports a high variety and density of wildlife both big and small and makes for excellent game viewing, particularly of predators.
