If you want the same reserve and the same wildlife at a lower price point, Ongava Lodge is the better value, and you still get the hide and the waterhole.

Horizon by Ongava is an ultra-luxury lodge of just three private villas on the 30,000-hectare Ongava Game Reserve, which borders Etosha National Park in northern Namibia. Formerly known as Little Ongava, it sits high on a ridge with uninterrupted views across the plains.

Where is Horizon by Ongava?

The lodge is on the Ongava Game Reserve, on the southern boundary of Etosha National Park, roughly 4 km from the Andersson Gate. That position gives you the best of both worlds: a private reserve with its own wildlife and night drives, and quick access to the park itself.

The villas at Horizon by Ongava

Horizon has only three villas, each with a large sitting room and fireplace, a private deck, an infinity pool and a sala. A long boardwalk meanders over rocks and trees, connecting the main lounge and dining area with the villas, so the whole property feels like a private home in the bush rather than a hotel.

The main lounge and dining area look out over a waterhole below the camp, and the open deck allows for relaxed dining under the African sky. Guests share a dedicated guide and vehicle, which means the pace of the day is yours to set.

Wildlife and activities at Horizon by Ongava

Days here are built around the reserve. Afternoon and night drives offer the chance to find species that are rarely seen in daylight, while guided walks slow things down and focus on tracks, plants and the smaller details of the bush. The highlight for many guests is tracking white rhino on foot with Ongava’s experienced guides. This is a carefully managed activity and we recommend arranging it in advance. Game drives and day trips into Etosha National Park are also offered.

Guests also have access to the Ongava Research Centre, where resident scientists work both in the lab and in the reserve. Most guest interaction with the research takes place at the ORC Visitor Centre, where you can wander through the self-guided exhibition area at your own pace. The adjacent 36-seat auditorium hosts interactive presentations and discussions.

Horizon by Ongava or Ongava Lodge?

Both sit on the same reserve and share the waterhole and photographic hide, so the wildlife experience is comparable. Horizon is the smaller, more private and more expensive option, with three villas and a dedicated guide and vehicle. Ongava Lodge has 14 rock and thatch chalets, a swimming pool and sunset waterhole views, and suits travellers who want the same reserve at a lower price point.
