Experience & Activities
Mvuu Lodge nestles discreetly on the banks of a lagoon just off the Shire River on the western boundary of the wildlife-rich Liwonde National Park. The main lounge building is set high above the water for long views upriver. Lodge facilities include a dining room, pub, lounge area, wildlife library, and swimming pool. Mvuu Lodge also features two stunning wooden dining decks, one at ground level and another sheltered amongst the trees, both offering a panoramic view of the wildlife-filled Mvuu lagoon and the Shire River. A wooden pathway over the lagoon will lead you to a refreshing swimming pool and sunbeds between fever trees – animals love spending time around it too! The path continues, taking you to a relaxing and mindfulness-infused yoga deck built entirely with local materials.
There are large numbers of elephants, reedbuck, waterbuck and sable, with a dense population of hippos in the river. Buffalo, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, zebra, roan, eland and rare black rhino have been introduced into “The Sanctuary,” a 4 000 ha-fenced area within Liwonde. The birdlife is prolific – over 400 of the country’s 650 bird species occur in the Park.
The Shire River Trail is a three-day hike across the park that can be booked ahead of time.
