Why does Botswana have a Low-season?

Have you ever wondered why Botswana’s Green Season is often considered a low-season? Is it truly justified, or could there be something exceptional about this lesser-explored time of the year?

A SAFARI FRANK team member ventured into Botswana in November, eager to immerse herself in the splendor of this distinct season, taking refuge in exquisite lodges nestled within the breathtaking Okavango Delta.

So, what exactly defines this Green Season, spanning from November to April?
It’s a time when the landscape undergoes a remarkable rejuvenation, bathed in the rejuvenating summer rains. But why is it called the “Green Season”? Well, it’s precisely because this period transforms the typically dry terrain into lush, verdant expanses, inviting wildlife to flourish amidst this revival.

In contrast, the High-Season, predominant from May to October, lures visitors due to the Delta’s peak state and drier climate, attracting many tourists.
During this time, the Delta bursts with life as animals congregate at water sources.
Mokoro tours offer a unique exploration of the Delta’s intricate network of waterways, providing an immersive experience unlike any other.
The captivating sight of the water’s sparkle gently veiling the grasslands, creating the perfect balance—just high enough for hippos to submerge, yet low enough for antelopes and even lions to roam, encapsulates the fascination that tourists seek during Botswana’s high season.

Comparing the Green Season with the high season in Botswana unveils stark differences in experiences. The Green Season entices nature enthusiasts, especially photographers and birdwatchers.
During this period, occasional thunderstorms add drama to the skies, setting a picturesque backdrop that photographers eagerly capture.
These rains bring life to the land, reviving once-dry areas and prompting wildlife to seek new water sources, while also welcoming a wave of newborns across the wildlife spectrum, injecting youthful energy into the already thriving landscapes.
Moreover, the rainfall acts as nature’s purifier, cleansing the air from dust and grime, offering photographers clearer, more vivid landscapes to capture.
The Green Season stands out for its affordable rates, serene settings, and a more secluded atmosphere, providing a respite from the winter blues of the Northern Hemisphere.

A Journey Through Botswana’s Wilderness: Unforgettable Encounters and Lodging Delights

During our employee’s travels at the end of November, she was fortunate not to encounter any rain. While this was a blessing for her journey, it marked a challenging time for Botswana’s wildlife and landscape. Nonetheless, the wildlife viewing proved exceptional, unveiling a panorama of wonders—from witnessing adorable 7-day-old lion cubs to encountering elusive leopards, cheetahs, and vast herds of roan antelopes. The game drives consistently delivered moments of sheer delight, never failing to captivate.

During her expedition, she explored various lodges including Kiri Camp, Okavango Explorer, Stanley’s Camp, and 4 Rivers Camp, with the latter capturing her heart. Her journey concluded with a visit to Kasane, conducting thorough site inspections at numerous accommodations recommended by SAFARI FRANK. Between these stunning lodges, she traveled swiftly via helicopter, treating herself to breathtaking aerial views of the delta’s magnificence. The trip was made even more memorable by the incredible cuisine, warm hospitality of the staff, and the inviting accommodations, leaving an indelible mark on her adventure.

Botswana’s Breathtaking Zebra Migration, a secret of the Green season

Beyond the Okavango Delta, other places like Nxai and Makgadikgadi Pans also burst into life with the rains.
Ever heard about the longest zebra migration? And guess what, it’s not in the Serengeti—it’s in Botswana! Picture this incredible scene: zebras making an amazing journey from the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park to Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan National Park.
The optimal period for witnessing the magnificent herds in all their glory would be during the months of January through March.

Botswana’s zebra migration is stunning! Imagine around 15,000 zebras traveling 500 kilometers from the Okavango Delta to the Makgadikgadi area. It’s an extraordinary journey, unlike anything else in the world.

If you’re looking for a migration experience that goes beyond Tanzania, Botswana’s Green Season is a hidden treasure.
