Why we like it
- Very immersive style and feeling true to Stonetown.
- Great restaurants in the building.
- Rich cultural experience.
Emerson Spice, originally a merchants’ house, features Zenji Deco colours and motifs, and two very different restaurants: the rooftop Tear House and the Secret Garden.
The principal structure which now houses Emerson Spice is actually a melding of two buildings and several distinct styles of architecture. The older L-shaped wing on the Northeast side, built in the Swahili Arab style, was originally owned by the last Swahili ruler of Zanzibar, Muhammad bin Ahmed, known as the Mwinyi Mkuu.
All rooms but Mimi have their own private veranda. All rooms are equipped with a small fridge, air conditioner, fan, and high ceiling mosquito net. The double rooms have one queen size double antique Swahili bed, enclosed en suite WC and bath and shower that is open or semi-open to the room. Therefore, the double rooms are not suitable as twins, although we can add a baby cot when needed. Aida is a duplex, suitable as a double or for a family with up to three children. On the first level there is a queen size bed in the main area, a single daybed in the sitting area, and two singles in the mezzanine loft. Both WC and bath are en suite and enclosed.
The Rooftop Tea House Restaurant
The Seafood based, set ‘Taste Safari’ degustation menu is prepared daily by our Zanzibari chefs. There is one exclusive sitting for dinner only, and service begins promptly at 7PM, but we welcome dinner guests from 6PM to enjoy the views in the sunset hour. The full menu includes a set 5 course menu at $40 per person excl. drinks. Advance reservations required. Due to the limited seating, a deposit is required to guarantee your reservation.
The Secret Garden Restaurant
Set amidst lushly landscaped hidden ‘ruins’, open to the skies, a Zanzibari inspired à la carte menu is offered at dinner. Look out for special events and performances of up and coming Zanzibari musicians.
A lighter seafood-based Lunch is served in both restaurants between 12AM and 4PM (last kitchen orders at 3.30PM)
