Bringing the whole family on a safari can often be a really rewarding experience but sometimes tricky to do so as most of the well-known lodges have strict child age restrictions and policies. There are however a number of lodges that specialize in accommodating families and we have found two that complement each other well!

Itinerary in Brief

3 Nights at Africa On Foot

3 Nights at Simbavati River Lodge

Starting off in the Klaserie Nature Reserve, an area with plenty of big 5 activity and relatively low commercial activity! You will see yourself in a family friendly old classical Kruger style bush camp, a great introduction to the Lowveld and its traditional style camps. Then moving just slightly South into the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, you change scenery completely and now find yourself in the shade of large canopy trees along the banks of a river.

This 6-night family safari is well suited for parents looking to take their 5-year-old or older children along on a safari to camps where they will be well looked after and catered for. The accommodation is of a suitable standard and you will find all the amenities one needs to be comfortable in this pristine wilderness. Both camps are private and in prime locations so one can expect to experience this area without the mass tourism that the rest of Kruger is known for. This along with the friendly child accommodating staff makes for a great family retreat!

Being a small and intimate camp, the staff are welcoming make you feel as if you are at home and have joined their close-knit family.

As the camps name suggests, they offer morning bush-walks where the knowledgeable guides introduce you to many of the smaller and more detailed aspects of the bush which one often misses whilst on game drives. That being said however, they also offer game drives and are located in a particularly productive area with frequent sightings of all members of the big 5.

Children of 5 years and older are allowed on game drives, however the age limit for walking safaris is 16 years old.

They also offer baby-sitting services which allows those parents who wish, a moment to relax and enjoy activities such as a spa or even game drives.
