Why we like it
- One of the most spectacular beach destinations in South Africa.
- Incredible whale watching (July to November)
- Easily accessible from Cape Town
Lekkerwater Beach Lodge offers a homely and comfortable beach experience in De Hoop, a magical coastal reserve chosen by ex-President FW de Klerk to be his ‘Camp David’ due to its extraordinary beauty and seclusion.
Lekkerwater Beach Lodge is located in De Hoop Nature Reserve, an exclusive coastal reserve halfway between Cape Town and George / Knysna on the world-famous Garden Route. The 34,000-hectare reserve is a melee of fynbos and beach, sand dunes and wetlands, all framed by the dramatic Potberg Mountains and the Indian Ocean.
The lodge has 7 bedrooms (6 twin/double and 1 family suite) positioned on a six kilometre stretch of pristine beach. Each has a unique view of the Indian Ocean through foor-to-ceiling glass windows, a veranda, woodburning stove and an ensuite bathroom.
The main area has wonderful views of the fynbos, beach and ocean, and guests will be able to watch whales and dolphins from the outdoor deck or the swimming pool. Indoors, there are family-style dining tables, a large interactive kitchen and plenty of sofas to cosy up in.
Lekkerwater itself (literally meaning ‘the place of good water’) offers a homely and comfortable beach experience in a magical setting. Each of the seven rooms are located right on a six-kilometre stretch of private beach, complete with stunning rock pools and fish life. Activities-wise, we’ve got walks with experienced naturalists, an array of fynbos to be discovered, a plethora of marine life to be explored, and a rare vulture breeding colony to be spotted (and that’s without mentioning the whales!).
Lekkerwater is at the heart of De Hoop bay which enjoys some of the highest concentration of whales anywhere on earth. During the 2018 whale season (July to November) De Hoop hosted over 1100 individual whales and there are usually upwards of 20 whales in view directly in front of Lekkerwater Beach Lodge at any one time -and the dolphins are here all year.
