What is Your Definition of Wilderness?

Wilderness is formally an uncultivated and uninhabited natural environment, left undisturbed by human activity. For those on an African safari, it is a humbling experience to become a participant in the wild, far from roads, where nature determines your path.

What to know:

  • Wilderness is characterized by being untrammeled, natural, undeveloped, and offering solitude.
  • Learn how walking safaris allow you to participate in the environment, instead of only observing it.
  • Wilderness trails are multi-day hikes where you carry all your own supplies, including water.
  • A true wilderness experience involves disconnecting from technology and timekeeping devices.
  • The aim is to leave as little impact as possible, carrying out everything that you carry in.

How We Define Wilderness In Africa

The thought of going for a multiday hike usually only interests a select few individuals, typically those we call “hikers” (myself not included!). But during my time up in the Northern Kruger, I was asked if I would like to go and be part of the guiding team for a few “sleepouts” and, better yet, “wilderness trails”. And I was hooked!

Finally, I found a valid reason to walk many kilometers with a heavy backpack in the African heat, carrying everything I needed to survive with me. To get into the real WILD. For me, wilderness isn’t the kind usually done by hikers, who try to conquer a set of trails or mountains.

Main elements of wild areas

This is the kind where at any point something can happen that determines the next path, route, or destination of the trail. It focuses on experiencing a natural environment that remains largely undisturbed and uninhabited, where the wild animals get the blood pumping!

Solitude and remoteness

You step off the beaten track, as far away from roads, cell phone signal, and cold beers as possible. You reach places few people have visited and see wildlife that is still largely unaffected by human pressure.

Why Walking Safaris Change The Experience

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Lowveld Trails company and make a short video on their business and attitude towards it all.

Redefining Your Getaway

You are planning your annual trip, but the usual luxury destinations feel predictable. You want a challenge that offers a deeper connection. The idea of a 5-day walking safari, where you carry your own water and disconnect completely, feels like the ultimate luxury.

For many travelers, true adventure means trading the comfort of a resort for the humbling experience of being a participant in a wild, untamed ecosystem, miles from any road or cell signal.

Seeing wildlife from the ground

“If you are in a vehicle, you’re an observer. And as soon as you get out on foot, you become a participant!”

Being the participant in the wilderness of the African bush is powerful. It is an incredibly humbling experience and really makes you appreciate everything around you.

How To Prepare For A 5-Day Wilderness Trail

Getting prepared for a 5day wilderness trail is all about sacrifice! Which comforts are you willing to give up to keep your pack as light as possible?

Pack light

I believe the phrase “pack like a mule, sleep like a king” was used numerous times for my trails! And it really is amazing to see what one can survive off for 5 days in the bush?!

Water and time

We even had to carry our own water, and when that runs out, we have to find our own out there! Before setting off, it helped to switch off all technology and leave anything that can tell the time behind. Totally “disconnect” from the norms and immerse yourself in what it was like many years ago.

But by far the best thing I noticed about wilderness trails is on the last day. It also happens to be day 5 of no showers. It is the excitement of getting back mixed with the sadness of leaving it all behind.

Leave No Trace On The Trail

Time spent in true wilderness often shifts your priorities, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for simple comforts and a quieter sense of calm within yourself.

Carry in, carry out

It truly is all left behind as you carry in what you need and you carry it all back out, leaving as little of an impact on the area as possible (only footprints!). This commitment to minimal human impact helps preserve the pristine wilderness character and supports the ecological integrity of these vital wildlife habitats.

What Wilderness Gives Back To You

At this point, one really appreciates 3 things in life: a warm shower, decent food, and an icecold beer. It is, in fact, at the point where you have all the things you have been craving the entire trail that you realize what you have just achieved.

Inner wilderness

You reached and experienced true wilderness. These support long-term conservation and biodiversity, for wildlife and for people. The impact is hard to put into words and is best felt while you are there.

Being a part of it all for a short time truly is incredible!
