Why we like it
- One of the most remote camps in Tanzania.
- World class habituated Chimpanzee tracking.
- Combines well with sister camp Chada Katavi.
- Set on the edge of the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika.
- Chimpanzee expert guides who know the individuals and community very well.
Some of the best Chimpanzee tracking in East Africa combined with a true wilderness and beach getaway, this is paradise far from the beaten path.
View on Google EarthWith and absolutely icon and unforgettable setting, Greystoke is situated within Mahale Mountains National Park and on the edge of Lake Tanganyika. The camp can only be accessed by scheduled flights, followed by a boat transfer as there are no roads in sight! Behind the camp stand the forested mountain peaks which are home to the resident wild, yet habituated, chimpanzee community and much more!
Greystoke has six open fronted double bandas which line the edge of the dense forest and all overlook the stunning beach and lake. Each has its own en-suite bathroom with flushing toilets, hot and cold water and a top floor which can accommodate a child over 8. But note that children under 12 cannot take part in Chimp tracking.
The main attraction and activity at Greystoke is tracking the habituated group of Chimpanzees with expert local guides who know all the group dynamics and individual characters in the community. It’s very important to note that tracking can vary greatly from day to day and season to season so prepare for it to be a very strenuous activity. Please enquire for more info on chimp tracking and the rules involved.
The forest is home to much more than the Chimpanzees such as bushbuck, bush pigs, leopards, amazing birdlife and plenty of other primate species. Other activities on offer include starlit dinners on the beach, kayaking in the crystal-clear waters and sundowners in the traditional dhows.
Greystoke Mahale is one of our most highly recommended additions to a safari in Tanzania and alongside the incredible chimp tracking, it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind in one of the most secluded and remote corners of the country.
Note: Due to the remote nature of Greystoke Mahale – a minimum of 3 or 4 nights is required depending on the flight schedule.
