Lake Shore Lodge is the ultimate place to experience the magic of Lake Tanganyika. Offering beautiful Chalets built right at the water’s edge, a myriad of adventure activities, a relaxing spa and fine dining. It doesn’t get much better than this!

Lake Shore is an owner operated lodge in a magical part of the longest lake in the world, lake Tanganyika! There are three levels of accommodation and LOTS of activities and adventures. Overall just a great experience for couples and families alike. The recently introduced scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam at USD 95 per person (!) one way, makes access easy and VERY affordable!

The CHALETS at Lake Shore are right at the edge of Lake Tanganyika. The front doors open completely to give incredible views of the islands in front of the lodge. Each room has its own beach area and is en-suite with a shower, toilet, vanity and dressing area.

With unimpeded views onto Lake Tanganyika, the BANDAS are designed for the more budget conscious traveller. These rooms are not en-suite. They have shared Zen-style bathrooms which are just behind the Bandas.

There are four beautiful, shaded CAMPSITES set under 100-year old mango trees. Even the campsite bathrooms have a view of Lake Tanganyika. Each campsite has running water, a barrel bbq and washing line. Campers are welcome to join the lodge for meals or any of the activities.

The Funky Mango Bar and Restaurant offers international cuisine. Lake Shore prides themselves in using only the freshest ingredients from local farmers and from their organic garden. Meals are served at the edge of the Lake under the stars, or in the main restaurant.

Welcome to the biggest freshwater aquarium on earth! There are no currents, no surges, just hundreds of cichlids all around you. The rock formations are quite spectacular and are home to so many endemic fish. Lake Shore is now a proud affiliate with NAUI, the world standard in Scuba Diving. From Feb 2020, they will offer ALL-INCLUSIVE Dive and Safari packages. Even if you have never dived before, come and get certified and experience the incredible beauty of Lake Tanganyika.

Guests can also snorkel at one of the seven islands in front of Lake Shore. There are literally hundreds of different species of cichlids in Lake Tanganyika and the area is lucky enough to have one very special endemic cichlid, the Opthalmotilapia Boops (known as the blue neon by hobbyists) at one of the islands. This cichlid is found only in this area, very special!

Western Tanzania is one of the last places to see chimpanzees in the wild. The day you look into their eyes will be a day you will never forget! Mahale National Park is home to the chimps and is 200km to the north of Lake Shore. Lake Shore offers 3-day and 6-day itineraries in either a speedboat or a dhow boat to Mahale to see the chimps. One of the BEST adventures available anywhere!

Some other activities on offer are:

  • Kayaking, what an awesome way to explore the Lake! There are double and single kayaks which are very stable and easy to use even for novice kayakers. Hop on and spend a few hours or join for a multiple day kayak safari.
  • Sundowners, the perfect way to end off a magical day! Join the crew for a trip up the river to do some birding and then a cruise around the islands to watch the sun slip behind the Congo mountains and return back to the lodge for dinner.
  • Right in front of Lake Shore there are Tanganyika Tiger fish who have made the bay their home. You can fish straight from our beach, but please be sure to tag and release them once you have lured them onto your line.
  • Just a short walk from Lake Shore is the old Kipili Mission built by the White Fathers and Congolese slaves between 1890 and 1895. This is one of the oldest churches in Tanzania and is well worth a visit.
  • Cycle on gravel tracks past rural farms and through miombo woodlands. This is a lovely way to see the areas around Lake Shore Lodge.
  • Join for the morning yoga or one of the yoga retreats.
  • Being perched close to Lake Tanganyika, whilst in a soothing Jacuzzi is a wonderful sensation!

Surround yourself with the natural beauty of the Lake by day, eat a well-deserved dinner around a roaring campfire & then fall asleep under the stars on a remote sandy beach by night. As good as it gets!
