Safari Rating
A safari that covers three vastly different habitats showcasing the best wildlife that Botswana has to offer. This diverse safari takes you to Franks favourite luxury camps in some of Botswana’s premier private concessions where an exclusive safari experience is guaranteed!
Itinerary in Brief
The diversity of activities on this safari are substantial. Both day and night game drives, armed walking safaris, boating & mokoro (water dependent), scenic flights between camps, underground photographic hides and optional sleepout platforms – this safari has it all!
The safari kicks off in the Kalahari, ‘the land of great thirst’ where you can expect to find many the classic Kalahari species such as Oryx, Ostrich, springbok, Kalahari lions and a few other surprises! A charter flight then sees you in the permanent swamps of the Okavango where both water and land-based activities are to be enjoyed. Venture out into the swamps to the seasonal heronry which is nothing short of a sensory overload, or search for Okavango Lions who have taken a liking to water and frequently swim from island to island whilst on a game drive. Another charter flight then has the group landing in a totally different grassland habitat where you will be based in an intimate private tented camp. From where walking safaris, night drives and star viewing will have you captivated.
With Frank Steenhuisen as your safari hosts, this is set to be a truly unforgettable and well-rounded safari experience that will last you a lifetime. Seldom does one safari have so much jam-packed into one itinerary.
Detailed itinerary
1st, 2nd & 3rd Nights: Dinaka
Guests are accommodated in seven spacious twin and double-bedded safari tents, each en-suite bathroom has an indoor and outdoor shower, hot and cold running water and flush toilet. Dinaka’s tents are well spaced and raised up on wooden decks giving the perfect vantage point over a permanent water hole.
The annual rains transform the arid desert landscape into a lush profusion of Kalahari vegetation, offering guests a unique insight into the lesser known desert experience. The Sleep Out Deck offers guests a panoramic view and the opportunity to spend the night under the magnificent African night sky.
Situated alongside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the focus of activities at Dinaka is exploring the Kalahari experience with wildlife ranging from giraffe to the antelope, small mammals like the honey badger, bat eared fox and porcupine to predators including the Kalahari lion, cheetah, leopard and brown hyena. Activities include morning and afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening.
4th, 5th & 6th Nights: Kanana
Guests are accommodated in seven spacious twin and double-bedded safari tents and one family tent, each with en-suite bathrooms with shower, hot and cold running water and flush toilet. The tents are well spaced, affording privacy whilst remaining within comfortable distance from the main camp area.
The annual floods transform parts of this concession into a true water paradise, offering guests the best of both worlds. Experience magnificent game sightings during drives as well as the unique experience of exploring the delta’s beautiful waterways by boat. There is also a Sleep Out Deck that offers guests the opportunity to spend the night under the splendid African night sky.
Situated in the Kanana Concession, the focus of activities at Kanana varies with the rising and falling levels of the Okavango Delta. Activities include morning and late afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening. Alternatively, you may explore the crystal-clear waterways by Mokoro or motorboat, and enjoy the magnificent variety of birds, plant and reptile species found in the area.
Birding is spectacular, and Kanana hosts a seasonal heronry that teems with activity, a Kanana highlight which converts all visitors to avid ‘twitchers’.
7th, 8th & 9th Nights: Footsteps Camp
A comfortable private camp which accommodates guests in three specially designed, twin-bedded, Meru tents complete with sewn-in floors. One of the three twin bedded tents can be converted into a family unit that sleeps five. Each tent has its own newly refurbished en-suit bathroom including wash basin, porcelain flush toilet and bush shower, even a daily laundry service.
The ‘bush kitchen’ is run by a chef and prepares menus to whet all appetites.
The camp is set on the edge of a permanent lagoon full of hippos and, from this wonderful base we are able to offer something very special – the opportunity to explore the wilderness on foot: to get up close and personal with the African bush. It’s not to be missed.
