April is one of the most interesting months to plan an African safari, but it rewards those who choose their destination carefully. The continent splits clearly in two: Southern Africa is entering its beautiful dry season shoulder period, with cooler temperatures, receding rains and excellent game viewing, while East Africa is in the middle of its long rains. That does not mean East Africa is off the table in April. It just means you need to know where to go and what to expect.
The upside? Fewer crowds, lower prices and some of the most spectacular green season scenery Africa has to offer.
Is April a good time to go on safari?
Yes, for the right destinations, April is an excellent time to travel. Southern Africa in particular offers some of the best conditions of the year in April, with the rains easing, landscapes still lush and lodges quieter than peak season. For travellers looking for value without compromising on quality, it is one of our favourite months to recommend.
East Africa requires more nuance. The long rains make some areas challenging, but gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda remains possible year round, and the green season brings its own rewards for birders and photographers.
Best safari destinations in April
South Africa
April is one of the best months to visit South Africa for a safari. The summer rains are winding down, the bush is still green and photogenic, and the heat of the previous months has eased considerably. In Kruger National Park, daytime temperatures are warm and comfortable, vegetation is beginning to thin as it dries, and game viewing is excellent. The lack of crowds before peak season makes this a particularly good time for a private safari experience.
In the Eastern Cape, malaria-free private reserves are at their most beautiful in April, with lush scenery and comfortable temperatures. Cape Town and the Cape Winelands are also superb in April. The summer crowds have gone, the weather is crisp and clear, and the famous mountain scenery is at its most dramatic.
Best for: First-time safari guests, photography, families, couples combining safari and Cape Town
Botswana
April is a superb time to visit Botswana. The rains have ended, the crowds are yet to arrive, and prices remain more competitive than peak season. In the Okavango Delta, the annual flood from Angola’s highlands is beginning to push through, marking the start of the spectacular water-based safari season. Boat and mokoro activities come into their own as the waters rise and the channels fill.
In Chobe National Park, large herds of elephant are beginning to congregate around the river, and predator activity is strong. In the Makgadikgadi Pans and Central Kalahari, the annual zebra migration from the pans to the Boteti River is underway, with large herds moving through the area against a backdrop of golden grasslands and dramatic skies.
Best for: Luxury travellers, water-based safaris, photography, couples and honeymooners
Namibia
April is an ideal shoulder season month for Namibia. The rainy season is drawing to a close, temperatures are far more comfortable than the summer months, and the landscape is still vivid and green. Skies are blue and dust-free, making for exceptional photography.
In Etosha National Park, wildlife is beginning to return to the waterholes as the seasonal pans start to dry. In Damaraland and along the Skeleton Coast, conditions are excellent for walking and exploring. Lodge rates are still at low season pricing, and availability is good.
Best for: Self-drive travellers, photographers, walking safaris, small group adventures
Zambia
By April, most of Zambia’s rains have eased and the landscape is beginning its transition from green to gold. The key wildlife areas are open and accessible, and the combination of lush scenery and strong wildlife activity makes this an excellent time to visit. Victoria Falls, viewed from Livingstone, is at or near its peak in April. The Zambezi is in full flood and the spray from the falls can be seen from kilometres away, making it one of the most dramatic natural sights in Africa.
Walking safaris in South Luangwa are excellent in April, with knowledgeable guides leading guests through a landscape teeming with wildlife and birdsong.
Best for: Walking safari enthusiasts, Victoria Falls, birders, adventurous travellers
Zimbabwe
April is a good month to visit Zimbabwe, particularly for Victoria Falls viewed from the Zimbabwe side. The falls are at their most powerful in April, and the combination of a Hwange National Park safari with a Victoria Falls visit makes for a compelling itinerary. Temperatures are comfortable and the crowds are manageable.
Best for: Victoria Falls, Hwange safari, multi-destination itineraries
Kenya
April falls within Kenya’s long rainy season, which means it is not the optimal time for a classic Masai Mara game drive safari. Rain can be heavy, some camps close and the long grass makes game viewing more challenging. However, Kenya in April has its own rewards. Lodge rates are significantly lower, birding is exceptional with migrant species still present and the wetlands particularly active, and the landscape is strikingly beautiful.
For travellers on a budget, or those combining a primate trek with a Kenya leg, April can work well with the right planning and the right camps.
Best for: Budget-conscious travellers, birders, photographers, off-the-beaten-track experiences
Tanzania
April is the wettest month in Tanzania and the most challenging for a traditional safari. Many seasonal camps in the Serengeti close during this period, and road conditions in some areas can be difficult. The wildebeest herds are in the south-western Serengeti at this point, making their way slowly north toward the Grumeti River as part of the Great Wildebeest Migration.
For travellers set on Tanzania in April, the southern parks including Ruaha and Nyerere can be rewarding, and some permanent camps remain open. We recommend speaking with our team before committing to Tanzania in April, as the experience can vary significantly depending on timing and location.
Best for: Adventurous travellers, southern park specialists, those combining with a Zanzibar beach extension
Uganda
April falls within Uganda’s long rainy season, which makes gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park more physically demanding. Trails are slippery and the forest is dense with rain. However, gorilla trekking in Uganda is possible year round, and April has real advantages. Permits are easier to secure, lodge rates are lower, and the gorillas tend to forage lower on the mountain slopes during the rains, sometimes making the trek shorter.
For travellers who do not mind mud and are properly equipped with good rain gear and sturdy hiking boots, April can be a rewarding and intimate time to trek. You are unlikely to share your experience with large groups.
Best for: Budget-conscious gorilla trekkers, adventurous travellers, those seeking solitude
Rwanda
Like Uganda, Rwanda’s gorilla trekking season in April falls within the long rains. The Volcanoes National Park forest is lush and atmospheric, and gorilla families can often be found at lower elevations. Permit availability is better than peak season and rates at some lodges are more competitive.
Rwanda is also an excellent birding destination in April, with the nesting season bringing spectacular activity across the country’s forests and wetlands.
Best for: Gorilla trekking, birding, off-peak luxury travel
Seychelles and Mauritius
April is a transitional month for both the Seychelles and Mauritius, moving from the wetter northwest monsoon season toward the calmer southeast trade winds. Conditions are generally pleasant, particularly later in the month, and both destinations pair beautifully with a Southern Africa safari at this time of year.
