zambia north luangwa national park safari mwaleshi camp 1

A perfect 7-night experience for those wanting to visit both South & North Luangwa on their Zambian Safari. Both camps are authentic bushcamps that are owner run and have incredibly knowledgeable guides. This is the traditional Zambian safari!

This safari starts when once you are collected from Mfuwe airport and transferred to the Tafika Camp which is located in the famous Nsefu sector of South Luangwa National Park. This section of the park is well known for its high concentrations of wildlife, particularly leopards, but also for its diversity in habitats. Tafika is the perfect tranquil base from which guests can enjoy walking safaris, unique cycling trails and game drives (day and night), during which the abundance of diverse game populations in the Nsefu sector ensure an unforgettable African safari! After Tafika a charter flight will take you to the remote North Luangwa National Park. There are few roads in this remote area and the majority of activities consist of morning and afternoon walks, following existing animal trails through pristine savannah. Mwaleshi camp is located within the Rhino zone where black rhinos have been reintroduced and freely roam, giving you the opportunity to search for these critically endangered mammals. The area is also well known for its high concentrations of buffaloes, lions and hyenas which interestingly hunt far more than they scavenge as in other wildlife areas.

Detailed Itinerary

4 Nights: Tafika Camp

Tafika Camp is situated on the banks of the Luangwa River, North of the Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa National Park. The remote location of Tafika makes it ideal for those who enjoy the serenity of the bush. Nestled in the shade of giant leadwood trees, the camp has a panorama of the river and its wildlife. Tafika can accommodate up to 14 guests in six thatched chalets (including a family chalet and honeymoon suite) with open-air en suite facilities, built around the trunks of stunning sausage trees. The food is excellent and is supplemented by a wonderful supply of home-grown fresh salad, fruit and vegetables. Tafika is the perfect tranquil base from which guests can enjoy walking safaris, unique cycling trails and game drives (day and night), during which the abundance of diverse game populations in the Nsefu sector ensure an unforgettable African safari.

The game drives accommodate a maximum of four guests guaranteeing unobstructed viewing and photography and enabling all guests on board to share in the knowledge and insights of the skillful guides. Dedicated spotters on night drives allow the guide to pay full attention to the animals, the road and to the safety and comfort of the guests. There is also the opportunity for a cultural visit to nearby Mkasanga Village where the school is supported by Remote Africa Safaris’ Tafika Fund in the form of books, educational materials, teachers’ salaries and pupils’ scholarships. Guests are always welcomed with great enthusiasm and plenty of smiles and the Mkasanga Choir delights in the opportunity to serenade visitors with the harmonies of Africa.

3 Nights: Mwaleshi Camp

Mwaleshi, located in the vast wilderness of North Luangwa National Park, is a 45 minute flight from Mfuwe Airport. Hidden within a scenic bend of the Mwaleshi River, the camp is a truly special and remarkable place, unlike any other. There are few roads in this remote area and the majority of activities consist of morning and afternoon walks, following existing animal trails through pristine savannah. All senses become attuned to the surrounding bush as guests experience the magical diversity of the area. Although the landscape is generally flat, the paths can be uneven, so lightweight, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

With just four thatched chalets rebuilt annually out of natural materials, en suite bathrooms open to the stars and uninterrupted views of the spectacular Mwaleshi River, the camp offers you a genuine feeling of solitude and seclusion. Life in camp is comfortable yet refreshingly simple. Game is prolific and the North Luangwa National Park is the only place one is likely to glimpse black rhino, which, following their extinction in Zambia in the 1980s, were successfully re-introduced here. Mwaleshi Camp is situated within the rhino sanctuary, improving chances of sighting this iconic species. A Luangwa Valley endemic, Cookson’s wildebeest, are abundant in the Mwaleshi area as are spotted hyenas. Birders will not be disappointed and the local diversity includes species that are not regularly spotted elsewhere in the Luangwa.
