Itinerary in Brief

The annual wildebeest migration in Liuwa Plains is the second largest in the world yet is devoid of the crowds that the great migration in east Africa attracts. Many guests prefer to combine Liuwa and the Kafue NP’s (as the Kafue is between Lusaka and Liuwa) and as such folk will often start with a stay at Musekese Camp and then head on to Liuwa – the plane which takes guests to Kalabo can stop-off in the Kafue and collect guests from Musekese on route (or drop them off after!).

The Liuwa Plains & Kafue Safari starts with your arrival in Lusaka where you will be collected by a driver and privately transported directly to Musekese Camp. Spend 4 nights here in Musekese exploring the game rich lagoon and surrounding woodland. The diversity of activities is one of the main draw cards of Musekese with the options of game drives and walking safaris as land based, with boating and fishing safaris along the Kafue river as the water based options. After those nights in Kafue you will catch a charter flight to Kalabo just south of Liuwa Plains. From here a game drive transfer will take you to your private mobile camp where you will spend the next 4 nights, the perfect base to explore the plains. Liuwa is one of the oldest protected wildlife areas in the whole of Africa it is home to the second largest wildebeest gathering and arguably the best hyena viewing in Africa. Birdlife is prolific in Liuwa, a staggering array and volume of birds can be found here, flying over and feeding in the dozens of seasonal pans of water, which at certain times of year are lined with the most beautiful wild flowers one can imagine. The perfect destination for photographers and birders looking for an ‘off the beaten path’ safari.

Detailed itinerary

Days 1-4 Musekese Camp:

Musekese camp is one for the seasoned safari travelers. In a remote part of Northern Kafue National Park, owners Phil and Tyrone have created an authentic Zambian bush-camp from where they conduct expert level safaris with their unrivalled knowledge of Kafue.

This intimate camp is set under the canopy of huge riverine trees right on the edge of a dambo which acts like a magnet for the regions wildlife. It is here that the resident lion pride lies in wait for their antelope prey, making for great game viewing. It is however a very vast area with plenty of water, so animal movements are unpredictable, and it is up to the excellent guides to work for the wildlife sightings as opposed to having them on a silver platter. This in-turn allows for them to shine in their ability to bring even the most seemingly insignificant aspect of the bush to life with their indepth interpretations of the natural world.

Days 5-8 Liuwa Plains Mobile Safari:

The Liuwa Plains NP is a remote and little visited wildlife area in the remote Western province of Zambia. One of the oldest protected wildlife areas in the whole of Africa it is home to the second largest wildebeest gathering and arguably the best hyena viewing in Africa. Birdlife is prolific in Liuwa, a staggering array and volume of birds can be found here, flying over and feeding in the dozens of seasonal pans of water, which at certain times of year are lined with the most beautiful wildflowers one can imagine.

For the Liuwa Plains Mobile Safari, J&M Safaris brings their own staff, game drive vehicles, experienced Liuwa guides, food and drinks, guest tents and linen and offer four-night safaris on this ‘mobile camp’ basis. They typically offer two set-date departures per year, which folk can book onto (6 spaces max, 4 min.) but likewise they are able to cater for small group trips on an ad-hoc basis too. Depending on the date of the safari departure it will dictate which of the community campsites is applied for use of – the time of year affects the wildlife movements and each camp has it’s unique associated wildlife and habitats.
