Just when you thought it could not get better than the experience in July, August arrives to step things up a notch!
August is undoubtedly one of the best months to do a safari almost anywhere in Africa. Most countries are in the heart of their dry season, temperatures are pleasant, and the game viewing is nothing less than exceptional. The Indian Ocean Islands are also worth a visit at this time of year.
The main event of this time of year is undoubtedly the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti and the Masai Mara! The herds are now congregated around the Mara River on the plains on both sides of the border between Tanzania and Kenya. River Crossings are likely taking place on a daily basis as the herds meander back and forth through the plains in search of food. The river crossings through the fast-flowing Mara River makes for some spectacular sightings, but expect some crowds, especially in the smaller Masai Mara. Travelers are advised to stay in the private conservancies around the Mara Reserve and in the wilderness zone of the Serengeti. These areas make it possible to visit the Mara River to experience the crossings, but then to leave the crowds behind when returning to the exclusivity offered by camps in these locations.

In South Africa the Greater Kruger experience remains exceptional, however Cape Town may still be cold and wet.
Be aware that all this perfection does come with a price and as it is peak season costs will be higher and reservations need to be made well in advance. There will also be more travelers around.
The only trouble you’re going to have is deciding where you want to go!
