Monachira lies close to the legendary Gudigwa Heronries, one of Africa’s most spectacular breeding sites for herons, egrets, and storks. The camp also offers rare opportunities to spot the elusive Pel’s fishing owl and sitatunga antelope. From this island base, guests can explore remote Delta channels by boat or mokoro, photograph lions stalking the floodplains, and experience Botswana’s wilderness through both land and water safaris.

Botswana Monachira Camp (25)

Monachira Camp takes its name from the waterway that wraps around the island on which it is built. The camp sits raised above the floodplains on wooden walkways, offering uninterrupted views across reedbeds, channels, and palm-dotted islands. Here, luxury is expressed through tranquillity, space, and attention to detail—private decks, elegant furnishings, and intimate guiding combine to create an atmosphere of refined wilderness living.

Situated inside the Moremi Game Reserve, Monachira provides direct access to some of the Okavango’s most secluded habitats. Each season brings shifting scenes of water and wildlife: lions crossing shallow channels, elephants feeding in the reeds, or herds gathering on open plains at sunset. Whether by mokoro, motorboat, or vehicle, every outing offers a new perspective of this extraordinary ecosystem.

Experiences & Activities:

Game Drives: Led by expert guides, game drives explore the diverse landscapes surrounding Monachira. Vehicles are limited to six guests, guaranteeing every guest a clear photographic vantage point. Expect predators on floodplains, elephant herds at the river, and plains game grazing on high ground.

Mokoro Excursions: Drift silently through lily-lined waterways aboard a traditional-style mokoro. This slow, immersive experience reveals frogs, aquatic birds, and hidden wildlife visible only from water level.

Boating Safaris: Cruise the channels in comfort aboard a motorboat, ideal for covering greater distances and exploring untouched tributaries. From the water, guests often witness elephants swimming, antelope feeding in shallows, and raptors hunting overhead.

Guided Nature Walks: Step into the island ecosystem on foot for an intimate look at tracks, insects, plants, and animal behaviour. Walks follow safe island terrain and highlight the intricate balance of life in the Delta.

Birding: With easy access to the famed Gudigwa Heronries and resident Delta specials, Monachira is a top-class birding destination. Keep watch for Pel’s fishing owl, African skimmers, wattled cranes, and migratory flocks during peak season.
