Where is this?

The safari takes place in Kenya’s Laikipia highlands which lie 250 kilometres north-west of Nairobi, in the shadow of snow-capped Mt Kenya. It is a vast area, the size of a small country, and a great conservation success story of recent times. The area consists of several wildlife conservancies and some cattle-ranches, catering for a wide range of travellers.

Laikipia is home to a large variety of animal species including some endangered ones, such as the black and white rhino, around 2000 elephants and Kenya’s ‘Northern 5’. These are the Grevy’s zebra, East African (Beisa) oryx, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, and Somali ostrich.

Laikipia is around a 6-hour drive from Nairobi and guests can either drive or fly there or get a road transfer from Nairobi to the close by town of Nanyuki, from where the operator will pick you up, or you can fly in to camp by helicopter!

What should I expect to pay?

Karisia Walking Safaris offer 3 levels of tented camps on the mobile safari, Luxury, Classic and the famous ‘Air Bed and Camel’ for more budget conscious travellers.

Based on 4 guests the rates are around USD 700 pppn for the Luxury camp, USD 600 pppn for the Classic version and USD 400 pppn for ‘Air Bed and Camel’ option. Children under 16 are 50% of the adult rates.

What Extensions do you recommend?

The other parks of northern Kenya such as Samburu, Meru and Lake Turkana are great extensions.

The Masai Mara is the other standout experience of Kenya depending on the time of year.

Kenya’s coast is just magnificent with excellent beaches for families and the adventurous, with Lamu a clear favourite of the Team!
