View on Google EarthImagine an unspoilt island within a Marine National Park, deserted beaches of pure white sand that extend for miles, sparkling turquoise seas criss-crossed by local dhows plying their trade, sunny days and star-studded nights. This is the enchanting island escape you always imagined. Azura Benguerra, the first eco-friendly resort in Mozambique, was hand-built by the local community and is operated in partnership with it.
Azura Benguerra Island’s public areas are right on the beach and open to the sea. They have created several different zones for your enjoyment and relaxation, from the comfortable lounge area, to the vibey Star Bar, and our fabulous wine cellar offering a selection of the owner’s wines, especially flown in from their Chateau in France. The Jellyfish Restaurant offers breakfast and more formal dining. There is a media room for those needing TV and internet access, a boutique at reception, and our Padi 5 Star dive centre with top of the range Scubapro equipment.
Azura on Benguerra Island is blessed with hot and sunny weather year round. Temperatures are generally in the upper 20′s to low 30′s celsius, and rarely fall below 20 degrees even at night. The water temperature is gloriously warm, and ranges from 24-30 degrees plus. Benguerra Island tends to receive on average a quarter of the rainfall that the mainland does, and there can be several months of the year when there is no rain at all.
A kaleidoscope of colour greets you above and below the ocean. Snorkel or dive the magnificent reefs that are home to the turtles that nest nearby. You can learn to dive at the PADI 5 Star Dive Centre or improve your skills through a range of PADI courses. Try your hand at fishing, the waters off Azura offer a variety of reef and big game fish. Sail on the traditional dhows, go island hopping, or cruise to deserted beaches to look for pansy shells. Swim up to dolphins, which are regular visitors to the beach, or track down humpback whales on their migration past our shores. The guides will show you the best this pristine marine paradise has to offer. Take a Land Rover tour of the island, and experience the local culture for which Mozambique is rightly famous, as well as visiting the school which was built with donations to Azura’s Rainbow Fund. Climb the dunes, some of which are scattered with the remnants of ancient Arab pottery. Visit the island’s lakes and spot a crocodile or two. Discover the local fauna and flora. Take a long walk and we will meet you with a picnic. Or join one of our star gazing events and lie back and listen to the ancient African stories that chart the cosmos.
Azura believe that dining is all part of the experience, from breakfast at the water’s edge to dinner in the wine cellar, a full service picnic on a sandy island, or romantic candle-lit beach dinners under the stars. They believe every day should be different. Famous for their Mozambican butler-hosts who take great pride in their innovative dining set-ups, and little touches to make your stay special, like the cocktail of the day delivered to your beachside sala, or a glass of wine from the Owner’s French Chateau in the Loire Valley.
