Why we like it
- Like being part of the Wood family and a home away from home.
- Great personal service and fresh wholesome food too.
- Some of the best and scenic game viewing areas a short drive away.
- The pool and lawn on the banks of the Mara River, a very tranquil space.
- Many activities on offer for kids, rather than only sitting in a vehicle on game drives.
House in the Wild is a great family retreat in the most northern section of the greater Masai Mara in Kenya. A real ‘home away from home’ and just a wonderful experience for children of all ages. Memories for a life time!

House in the Wild is located north west of the Maasai Mara Reserve, within the Enonkishu Conservancy bordering Lemek, and Ol Chorro conservancies. The House in the Wild Lodge, Main House and Cottages are set on beautiful grounds, on the banks of the Mara River, within a 1000-acre private estate Naretoi, within the Enonkishu Conservancy.
Whilst being on the edge of the one of the best game viewing areas, the immediate area surrounding House in the Wild is on a wildlife estate (what used to be a commercial farm), and it is fenced therefore safe for walking, running, bicycle riding, offering guests a first-hand experience of what life in the bush is like! Great for kids, there are cows to milk, a farm school to visit, Maasai to dance with!
Tarquin and Lippa Wood, along with their daughters Tamara and Pepali, and son Wilbur, live 5 minutes away from the House. Tarquin and Lippa are the founders of the Enonkishu Conservancy and the Mara Training Centre. The house was originally a family getaway on the Wood’s commercial farm but has been restored and lovingly put together by Tarquin, Lippa and their team.
The House in the Wild is a private 12-14 bed lodge, and consists of a main lounge and dining area, a swimming pool with a thatch gazebo, a bar and four cottages. The mess area and four cottages offer the warmth and rustic charm of a family lodge, with all the home comforts you could ask for.
The Lodge is hosted by an excellent team of local staff and overseen by the Wood family. Guests can enjoy accompanied bush walks, game drives, sundowners, bush meals and farm visits.
House in the Wild also has a private Villa offering. The Wood’s private residence, an exclusive-use property giving travellers, looking to spend quality time with loved ones, a private setting where they can experience a once-in-a-lifetime adventure together on the banks of the Mara River. The Villa in the Wild is also on the Naretoi Estate and sits 1 km upstream from House in the Wild, overlooking the Mara River on one side and a marshy glade of indigenous trees on the other.
Guests can get away from the beaten track and experience the ultimate exclusive and private safari alongside a meaningful life changing journey, learning about the inspiring stories of how communities build their livelihoods in harmony with the wildlife of the Enonkishu Conservancy.
The House in the Wild is a welcome retreat for a few days respite while still being “on safari”, especially for families!
