The Roberts’ family has been in the safari industry for over 50 years, operating and guiding safaris across the continent and developing lodges in Kenya, as well as contributing hugely to wildlife conservation in Kenya. Mobile Expeditions is run by Roberts family members Ross and Caro and their Classic Camp and Explorers Camps are set up in wild locations throughout Kenya.

Willie Roberts, the founder of Mobile Expeditions and Caro’s father, was a true visionary and one of the forefathers and most instrumental ambassadors of wildlife conservation in Kenya. He set up the first Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya in the Masai Mara, essentially founding the ‘conservancy movement’, saving the greater area from being carved up for farming, laying down a clear path of success for community conservancies in Kenya and setting an example and an inspiration for others to follow.

Itinerary in Brief

Day 1: Arrive Chyulu!
Day 2: Explore Chyulu Hills
Day 3: Top of Chyulu Hills
Day 4: Choice of Adventures
Day 5 & 6: Tsavo East
Day 7: Depart

The Luxury Mobile safari Chyulu Hills and Tsavo combines true luxury with two remote locations and an array of adventure activities second to none! The safari is arranged for small groups of minimum 4 people and up to 20 people on an exclusive basis.

The camp will be set up in a beautiful location in Mbirikani Group Ranch in the Chyulu Hills, which rise from 3000 feet to 7500 feet and run for 40 miles. The long line of extinct volcanic craters and peaks, now lush with mist fed forests are a hikers and photographers paradise, offering wonderful walks and exceptionally scenic views out towards Kilimanjaro to the south and Tsavo National Park to the East. These beautiful hills run down to meet the low acacia woodland to the rolling savanna plains and dry semi desert country at the bottom. Due to the lack of water in the hills, wildlife is more prolific in the low country where there are 38 recorded species of large mammals including all the big five – Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Leopard and Buffalo.

The safari spent 4-nights in the luxury camp in Chyulu followed by two nights at the Ithumba Elephant Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East National Park.

While at Chyulu explore the area on day and night game drives, on foot, flying over the hills, or horseback and see the lava craters, the forest and the BIG5! Visit he Big Life Foundation HQ and learn about the fantastic conservation work in the area, also spend time with the Maasai tribe in their traditional homestead.

At Tsavo visit the incredible project that has successfully been reintroducing orphaned elephants back into the wild for many years. Do game Drives within the unique Northern Area of Tsavo, time to relax in the beautiful camp, enjoying the resident wildlife, excursions to the Tiva river and Yatta Plateau, guided hike up Ithumba Mountain, guided walks along the Tiva river and sundowners.

Each days activities are tailored to your interests and desires and always discussed the evening before. The below is a suggestion of what we could arrange during your six night stay.

Similar itineraries can be arranged to the Mara and Northern Kenya, including Meru NP.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Chyulu!

On arrival at the Chyulus, the Mobile Expeditions Team will meet you with their open sided 4×4 vehicles and drive you back to the luxury mobile camp.

Enjoy a delicious welcome lunch and a relaxed afternoon to allow you to ease in to the environment, followed by an evening game drive to the lower savannah and sundowners.

Day 2: Explore Chyulu Hills

After breakfast at the camp, you and your guides will set out on a day game viewing adventure with a picnic lunch.

Today you will also get a chance to explore the lava caves. Upon returning from this you will find hot water for showers and a campfire to sit around and enjoy the views and listen to some campfire stories whilst dinner is being prepared.

After this you may like to go on a night drive to try to find some of the wonderful nocturnal species and other game in the hills.

Day 3: Top of Chyulu Hills

Today’s early morning adventure we suggest a trip with a picnic lunch up to the top of the Chyulu Hills ridge line, this is around 7000 ft so take some warm clothes.

There are spectacular mist fed indigenous forests and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro to the South and Tsavo to the East.

After lunch climb up the magnificent volcanic crater and back to camp for hot showers and drinks by the camp fire.

Day 4: Choice of Adventures!

This day you may like to do some slightly different activities also available in the Chyulu Hills:

  • Horse Riding, get close to giraffe and other plains game on horseback.
  • A scenic flight to see the beautiful Chyulu Hills from the air.
  • The Big Life Foundation HQ is about 1.5 hours away. This very informative visit will give you an insight into the conservation world and all of its challenges. While you are here it is also a possibility to go with the tracker dogs on an exercise and learn how these amazing animals help catch and deter poachers.
  • Visit the Maasai tribe in one of their traditional homesteads. It is fascinating to see these people who are still holding to so many of their traditions in this quickly changing world. This would be a drive of about one and a half hours each way.

Day 5 & 6: Tsavo East

We would highly recommend as an add on to the Chyulu experience a 2 night stay at Ithumba Elephant Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East National Park. Approximately a three hour drive away. We would takeover the Ithumba camp exclusively. It is a very charming, beautifully built rustic camp.

This is an incredible project that has successfully been reintroducing orphaned elephants back into the wild for many years. Tsavo is the largest and one of the oldest established parks in Kenya.

Game drives within the unique Northern Area of Tsavo, time to relax in the beautiful camp, enjoying the resident wildlife, excursions to the Tiva river and Yatta Plateau, guided hike up Ithumba Mountain, guided walks along the Tiva river and sundowners.

Day 7: Depart

Depart after breakfast to your next destination with memories for a life time!
