Why we like it
- Remote and beautiful setting in North Luangwa National Park.
- Walking safaris as the main activity to explore the region.
- Excellent wildlife sighting and birding.
- Combines perfectly with sister camps in North & South Luangwa.
Mwaleshi Camp, located in the vast wilderness of North Luangwa National Park, is a 45-minute flight from Mfuwe Airport. Hidden within a scenic bend of the Mwaleshi River, the camp is a truly special and remarkable place, unlike any other.
View on Google EarthMwaleshi Camp is set in North Luangwa National park, there are few roads in this remote area and the majority of activities are done on foot, following existing animal trails through pristine savannah. All senses become attuned to the surrounding bush as guests experience the variations in the magical diversity of the area.
With just four thatched chalets rebuilt annually out of natural materials, en-suite bathrooms open to the stars and uninterrupted views of the spectacular Mwaleshi River, the camp offers you a genuine feeling of solitude and seclusion. Life in camp is comfortable yet refreshingly simple.
Game is prolific and the North Luangwa National Park is the only place one is likely to glimpse black rhino, which, following their extinction in Zambia in the 1980s, were successfully re-introduced here. Mwaleshi Camp is situated within the rhino sanctuary, improving chances of sighting this iconic species. A Luangwa Valley endemic, Cookson’s wildebeest, are abundant in the Mwaleshi area as are spotted hyenas, known for their pack-hunting prowess here rather than the scavenging behaviour typical in other areas of the Luangwa.
Birders will not be disappointed, as the Mwaleshi birdlife offers diversity that is not regularly spotted elsewhere in the Luangwa Valley. These include some East African species: the chestnut-mantled sparrow weaver, the yellow-throated longclaw and the white-winged starling to name a few.
The morning walks start early to avoid the heat of the day, providing ample opportunity to experience the bush with all your senses. Guides take into account the abilities of the group to ensure the comfort of guests at all times. Drinking water is supplied and the accompanying tea-bearer conjures up a welcome cup of fresh tea or coffee with a light snack during a mid-way break. Guests return to camp mid-morning with time to relax and enjoy a refreshing lunch, followed by a siesta. Afternoon tea and coffee is served around 15:30 before guests depart on another shorter walk, returning to camp before dusk.
Although the landscape is generally flat the paths can be uneven, so lightweight, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Longer stays exploring this unparalleled remote wilderness from Mwaleshi Camp, may afford guests the opportunity to enjoy a day trip to the Mwaleshi Falls, rated by many as one of Zambia’s top highlights.
