Tsavo features prominently in the world-famous book and film, Out of Africa. In the film, Robert Redford plays Denys Finch Hatton, and Meryl Streep his lover, Baroness Karen Blixen. Denys Finch Hatton loved Tsavo and lived and died here. At Finch Hatton they have preserved the ideals that he lived by: a passion for the Kenyan wilderness coupled with a dedication to elegance and style.

Finch Hattons is a luxury tented safari camp that combines its love for Tsavo with world-class facilities. The camp is completely isolated, so much so that you would be forgiven for forgetting that the rest of the world exists at all. In this place, it’s just you, the vast and varied terrain that stretches in every direction, and the many beasts and birds that call it home. Discover the safari of a bygone era; a camp built to be minimally intrusive, while combining the modern-day luxuries of any 5-star boutique hotel. Fusing modern design with rustic charm, you will experience the authentic African sights, sounds, tastes and smells.

Most people tend to forget about Tsavo and why it is amongst the top pick of many experienced safari guides. Being Kenya’s largest game park and with so few lodges in the area, you will soon understand why. The park is amongst the most iconic in Kenya with its diverse landscapes and is rich history

Set in 15 hectares in the heart of Tsavo West National Park, the camp offers a chance to experience the thrill of a true African safari without foregoing the opulence afforded by contemporary comforts. With just 17 tented suites, surrounding the hippo pools fed by the freshwater springs of Mt Kilimanjaro and the Chyulu Hills, the camp is the ideal combination of adventure and intimacy. The tents’ open-plan design invites the cool breeze that drifts over the nearby natural springs and brings the sounds and scents of the African bush directly to you. The result is a one-on-one experience with Africa; this is the bush in all of its immediate and unapologetic beauty.

There are 14 spacious (105 m2) exquisitely furnished and elevated luxury tented suites each with unobstructed views of the hippo pools from the outdoor sitting deck. Each tent has a lavish en-suite bathroom complete with two outdoor showers, an indoor shower, a free-standing copper bathtub and natural body products. Additional features include a pillow menu, a maxi bar with homemade snacks, complimentary wi-fi and a ceiling fan.

With two private en-suite rooms, the elevated two-bedroom suites are even more spacious (205 m2) and ideal for families. Furnished and designed in the same style as the standard suites.

The presidential spacious master suite (200 m2) offers clear views of the surrounding hippo pools from the extended viewing deck and private heated plunge pool. To offer a full in-room service, the suite is also equipped with a lounge and dining area, a small kitchen, a guest bathroom and a spare bedroom for a bodyguard or nanny. Additional services offered in the suite include a private chef, butler service and exclusive use of a safari vehicle.

At Finch Hattons, there’s no shortage of activities to keep you busy and entertained – you can select as many of the activities as you wish. Activities include:

  • Day and night game drives.
  • Bush walks, crater climb and lava flow visit.
  • Bush breakfast and sundowners.
  • Tsavo day trip adventures to numerous places of interest.
  • Cultural visits to the surrounding communities.
  • Hike through the Chyulu forests.
  • Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary visit to view black rhino.

All in all, a charming ‘old-day safari’ but with modern day luxury, great for couples and families and not to be forgotten soon.
