Pelo Camp

Pelo Camp is situated in the very heart of the wetlands of the Okavango Delta, the 60 000-hectare (150 000-acre) Jao Concession embodies all the magic and mystique of Botswana with vegetation that varies from permanent swamps to dry land. In the east, the Jao Flats boast water channels that cut their way through the papyrus and reed beds, providing the perfect environment for wildlife. Beautiful lush palm islands dot the water. Around the Jao Flats spectacular herds of red lechwe are followed by the primary predators – lion and leopard.

This intimate camp’s five spacious tents look out over the surrounding water. The main area comprises a tented dining area and lounge situated under impressive Wild date palms, Jackalberry and Natal mahogany trees. There is also a raised viewing platform built onto an old anthill.

Meru-style safari tents on the ground with sandy pathways on the ground. En-suite facilities comprising of an indoor shower, outdoor bucket shower, single vanity basin and a flush toilet. Writing desk and chair, easy chairs, luggage rack, tea and coffee making facilities, yoga mat and resistance bands, electronic safe and veranda with deck chairs. No air-conditioning, however, ceiling fans provided in each of the rooms. During winter months hot water bottles, extra blankets and throws are provided. Amenities include: bathrobes and kikois, shower gel, hand and body wash, shampoo and conditioner, lotion, insect spray, shower caps, vanity kit, sewing kit, umbrellas, mosquito repellent spray and mosquito coils are supplied in each tent.

Pelo Camp lies in a true wetland area of the Okavango Delta, an ideal habitat for the elusive sitatunga antelope and common red lechwe. Hippo and crocodile are also regularly sighted. In the dry season lechwe, impala, elephant are prevalent, with lion, leopard and buffalo sighted occasionally. Birdlife is exceptional with the largest concentrations of endangered wattled crane found here as well as slaty egrets, rosy-throated longclaws, African skimmer and Pel’s fishing-owl.

ACTIVITIES

• Water-based activities only, in 06 x 2-seater mekoro, 01 x 9-seater and 01 x 11-seater boat (water levels permitting).
• Guided nature walks on request (subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide, therefore pre-booking is essential).
• Birding (Internationally Recognised IBA – Important Birding Area).
• Fishing on a catch and release basis (fishing is prohibited in Botswana in January and February for fish breeding purposes).

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES AT AN ADDITIONAL COST

• Scenic helicopter flights ranging in duration from 30, 45 to 60 minutes – with guest numbers as a minimum 2 and a maximum up to 5 or 6 depending on the helicopter used; half day (morning or afternoon).
• Tsodilo Hills (UNESCO World Heritage Site) excursion to learn more about Botswana and the history of the San Bushmen – with guest numbers as a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10.
