Savage Wilderness Riverside Camp is on the Tana River two hours north of Nairobi on the main road to Nanuyki. This makes the camp ideal to take a break from driving, stretch your legs and some exciting white-water rafting (and lunch) before continuing with the journey. The camp also offers an amazing array of adventure activities not easily seen elsewhere, making it possible to stay for 2 or 3 days at this wonderful camp.

The camp offers the following accommodation options:

  • Cottages: There are 22 cottages at the riverside campsite, all with their own patios and en-suite bathrooms. Each cottage has 3 beds with the option of a fourth if required. Although the area is not a malaria zone, the camp provides a mosquito net for every bed.
  • Bunk Houses: At camp there are two bunk houses, which are perfect for school or youth groups looking for cheaper accommodation. Each bunk house can hold 32 beds and also offers mosquito protection.
  • Camping: There are 7 lovely grassy areas at camp, perfect for camping. The camp provides and erect your two-man tent so that it’s ready for you when you arrive. Two mattresses are also provided.
  • Own Camping: Alternatively bring your own tents and camping equipment and camp on the beautiful lawns.

The other facilities at Savage Wilderness Riverside Camp are:

  • Swimming Pool: The camp has two swimming pools, one on each side of the river. Both have patio areas where you can lie around and catch up on your suntan.
  • Eating Areas: The camp has outside shaded eating areas, all with a BBQ grill, washing facilities, tables and chairs. Trust us food tastes even better in these beautiful surroundings!
  • Bar: The bar at camp is known as the ‘Paddle Inn’ and is open daily from noon to 11pm. It’s a simple bar where they offer beers and soft drinks and have a television so you don’t have to miss out on your favourite soccer match.
  • Laundry: The camp’s cleaning staff offers a laundry service, but you should allow at least two days for your clothes to come back clean and dry.

Now for the REAL stuff, have a look at this amazing list of activities:

  • Rafting: Admire nature’s glorious spectacle amid the calm, tranquil waters of the Tana River before taking on the vibrant, spirited and extreme Class IV/V rapids! There’s something for everyone on the Tana, all year round.
  • Kayaking: Learn to kayak at the camp with a 2-hour taster session or take a 1-to-5-day course where they will introduce you properly to moving water, ready for some serious kayaking adventures.
  • Rock Climbing: Reach new heights and have a bash at rock climbing on either the artificial climbing wall at camp, or on a natural rock face located just 15 minutes’ drive away. The camp teaches the necessary skills needed to climb routes between ‘moderate’ and ‘severe.’ The routes are no higher than 14 metres. Group members will also learn (under strict supervision) the controlling of safety ropes used by their fellow climbers.
  • Bungee Jumping: The camp has teamed up with Bungeewalla, the only bungee jumping company in Kenya with a 60m high tower overlooking the glorious Tana River, are you ready?
  • Mountain Biking: Explore the amazing camp and surroundings by mountain bike. The guides will give you a safety briefing and some technical advice on how to ride on rough terrain, especially downhill. There are several different routes of varying difficulty and distance. For example the fantastic ride to Sagana and around the Kiambicho hills is about 3-to-4-hours before returning to the camp.
  • Zip Line: Fly across the Tana River on the new zip line, the perfect way to de-stress on a rush of adrenalin and marvel at the beautiful scenery from a different point of view.
  • Archery: A new activity at camp, come try your hand at archery and see how good your aim is as you shoot targets with a bow and arrow.
  • Nature Walks: Explore on foot, the stunning surroundings around camp, the Tana River and the Mission waterfall. A 2-to-3-hour walking tour with one of the knowledgeable guides who will teach you about the wilderness, the animal and human life within, as well as take you on a visit to the Mission waterfall.
  • Stand Up Paddling (SUP): Another new activity at camp, SUP originated in Hawaii as an off shoot of surfing. A 2013 report called it the outdoor sporting activity with the most first-time participants of any in the United States that year. It is the fasted growing flat water recreational sport. Try your hand at it in the flat water outside camp.
  • Sun Downers: Sit back and watch the sky break open in colour in one of Kenya’s beautiful, breathtaking sunsets, while enjoying a breath-taking ‘Sun-Downer’ from Kiambicho hill in front of camp.

The camp has designed various all-inclusive 2-to-3-day packages to satisfy all of your adventure needs. The packages include everything from transport to and from Nairobi, lodging, all meals, and all the activities that you wish to do.

The camp works very closely with the local community, especially the local school in Riandira. They are committed to improving the school to make it a better place for their children to learn and grow and so they run community service days in which they go to the school and build classrooms, make desks, paint and plaster walls, and much, much more.
