“Enjoy special family adventures in the Laikipia Wilderness”
‘Laikipia Wilderness’ is one of the BEST family safari camps and destinations in Africa! For over 20 years they have specialised in hosting families and the camp has a huge range of adventurous activities that will engage families and kids of all ages.
The camp and owner-managers Steve and Annabelle Carey have been nominated one of ‘Condé Nast’s Top Ten’ family holiday specialists, and for many years have designed activities to suit families and keep everyone entertained. This is a really great holiday, as a safari can be an incredible bonding experience. Most people reconnect as they leave behind the gadgets of the modern world and surround themselves in nature and adventure.
Laikipia Wilderness camp is extremely flexible with activities, which is essential for families and with no day exactly the same. All activities are designed to suit individual groups as each is different! The activities are perfect for families, as children often do not want to sit in a vehicle for hours on end.
Whilst your wish list may be to see lots of wildlife, experience has shown that kids are more interested in getting out of the car and doing things! As such, over and above game drives and bush walks, activities for children at Laikipia Wilderness include:
● River rope swing. Spend an afternoon swinging into the river from a rope, Tarzan-style. Great fun for parents too!
● River rafting in the fairly shallow river for older children.
● Kayaking, cave-exploration and rock-scrambling.
● Swimming, tubing and fishing in the river.
● Learning to paddle a raft around a safe pool in the river.
● Tracking walks with guides Stephen and Mugambe, for kids aged 5 and above.
● Making plaster moulds of animal tracks to take home with you.
● Learning archery, making bows and arrows in the bush, setting traps and survival training.
● Fly camping under the stars with parents.
● Cooking and painting classes.
The philosophy of the camp is:
“Each day is crafted to suit each group depending on who they are and what they would like to see and do. Life is too short for sitting around and every moment on safari counts, so prepare to be busy and excited!”

Laikipia Wilderness is ideal for families of all ages and sizes, including intergenerational trips!
Steve and Annabelle’s children are at school in Nanyuki but spend most weekends and holidays in the camp and the family just loves having other children around.
The guides at the camp all have children and Kenyans are very warm, family minded people and delightful hosts. So, children of any age are welcome, however they recommend 4 years and above as it can be tiring for younger children.
Laikipia Wilderness is in the central part of the Laikipia highlands, a 2-hour drive north of the town of Nanyuki in Kenya. Guests will fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Nanyuki where camp staff will pick you up for a road transfer to the camp. The camp is in a real wilderness area of Laikipia and at around 2000 m above sea level, it offers a great climate all year-round with low malaria risk for children.

The rates start at USD 430 per person per night for an adult and USD 215 for a child. These rates exclude conservation fees which are USD 215 and USD 60 for adults and children respectively.
Laikipia Wilderness also offers some specials for longer stay’s and combining Meru NP with Laikipia.
The stay at Laikipia can also be combined with a similar style stay at Meru NP also run by Steve and Annabelle.
An extension to the Masai Mara makes for a great combination for families as the malaria risk there is also low. There are also some great family properties in the Masai Mara such as ‘House in the Wild‘ and ‘Acacia House’.
